White Cross Placements this year on October 31 – 2015
WHITE CROSS PLACEMENTS REVIEW
Beginning in 1926, local volunteers have followed a Cowichan Valley tradition of placing small, white wooden crosses, decorated with a lapel poppy and a sprig of cedar, on the graves of veterans for remembrance through the month of November. Introduced by the Royal Canadian Legion before today's November 11 cenotaph services were first organized, in some communities the practice of placing crosses has continued because it remembers all veterans, while the cenotaph memorial emphasizes the sacrifice of those who fell overseas.
Starting in 2011, the Mill Bay/Malahat Historical Society has organized white cross placements at all South Cowichan cemeteries except St. John's Cobble Hill, while Mike Bieling of the Old Cemeteries Society maintains the records of veteran graves. Members of Canadian Legion Malahat Branch and Air, Sea, and Army Cadet corps assist on the placement days. This collaborative effort has re-energized the local remembrance cross tradition.
On Saturday, November 5, 2016, white cross placements to mark the graves of all armed services veterans will take place starting at 1:00pm at Shawnigan Cemetery with 31 crosses and continue in Mill Bay with 12 crosses at the heritage church (former Methodist/United) at the end of Church Way.
Then at 2:00pm at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Cemetery, bagpipes will provide the background for placement of 48 crosses, with socializing and refreshments to follow in the pastoral centre.
The Mill Bay/Malahat Historical Society coordinates these placements and is grateful for the cooperation of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 134, Cowichan Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, Malahat Lions, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, and the Old Cemeteries Society.

20 - MYSTERY HISTORY TOUR #20: Former Chip Meredith home featured in "One Man's Dream." Sunday, July 19, carpooling from Pioneer Square Mall lower lot at 1:15 p.m. You've seen Roger Carr in the movie acting as Major MacFarlane in front of a heritage house which was actually the long-time home of Charles "Chip" Meredith and his wife Molly. Chip was a well-known and well-loved elder, honoured by the Mill Bay Community League with life membership. It was the gifting of artifacts from the Meredith estate that spurred the Mill Bay/Malahat Historical Society into starting our museum, where you can see the portrait of Molly in the bedroom exhibit. Present owners Heather and Fred Gallagher have invited a long-time neighbour and some Meredith family members to join us in hopes of adding more depth to the stories about the Merediths and their home. We'll see enlarged photos of early life there and a variety of artifacts that went with the property, including seven beautiful whiskey jugs that would have delighted Major MacFarlane. You won't want to miss this tour, and you'll need to buy a $5 MBMHS membership at the start if you haven't done so already in 2015. For more information call 250-743-2686 or 743-0144.

SIGNS OF PLACES PAST
Ever pass by a building and wonder what was there before? This MBMHS project will help you find out. MBMHS places signs and banners with historical photographs and information around the community in collaboration with local businesses, institutions, and individuals. You can find them at Pioneer Square Mall, Kerry Park Recreation Centre, Mill Bay Community Hall, South Cowichan Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information Centre, Mill Bay Medical Centre lobby, Rusticana Coffee, Mill Bay Shell, and Malahat Bungalows Motel.
“We have had so many positive comments from residents and tourists as well as business operators who have enjoyed seeing what the area used to look like," says Maureen Alexander, MBMHS President.
"We are pleased that those who proudly display the Signs of Places Past demonstrate an appreciation for the places and people who have made the Mill Bay and Malahat areas the community it is today," says Jim Wisnia, who heads this project. He has plans to install more signs in the coming year.
At 2 pm on Sunday, October 16, behind the Mill Bay Tim Horton's, a sign commemorating Bayview School will be dedicated by the Mill Bay/Malahat Historical Society and the Cowichan Valley Schools Heritage Society.
Former Bayview School students and teachers, and the general public, are invited to attend this event.
Please bring your stories, photos, and other memorabilia from the school with you so more of the school's history can be documented by society members in attendance.
The society is on the lookout for historical photos of the area that could be scanned for use in the sign and banner project or in exhibits at the MBMHS Museum in Pioneer Square Mall. If you have any photos you think we might be able to use, please call us at 250-743-0144.
