Before Canada reached for space, one man reached for the stars right here on Vancouver Island.

The Mill Bay-Malahat Historical Society is proud to announce our upcoming Tea and Tales event featuring a special screening of the award-winning documentary, Northern Star. Join us on Saturday, June 20, 2026, as we welcome acclaimed filmmaker Nick Versteeg to share the incredible legacy of John Stanley Plaskett.

A Visionary Legacy

Long before the robotic arms of the International Space Station or the high-tech sensors of the James Webb Telescope, JS Plaskett was mapping the rotation of the Milky Way from the Malahat. This 60-minute documentary showcases how one man’s brilliant mind and tireless determination put Canada on the global scientific map during the early 20th century.

Inspiring the Next Generation

This isn’t just a look at the past; it’s an invitation to the future. By highlighting the achievements of Plaskett and the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, Northern Star aims to ignite curiosity in viewers of all ages. We especially encourage families and students interested in science, astronomy, and exploration to attend and discover how big dreams can start in small communities.
